Close to Zurich University and ETH and just 10 minutes from the city centre, Kreis 6 is the place that I’ve called home for the last twenty years.
When I set up Kreis 6 English I wanted to create a language school for locals. I wanted to differentiate my language school from its larger rivals. The idea was that people would come to learn English and to meet others who lived nearby, the social aspect of learning a language being one of the key features I wanted to offer. Nobody would have to spend a long time travelling to lessons so a weekly conversation class could fit easily into people’s busy schedules. It seemed to make a lot of sense to me but things don't always go according to plan.
From the outset I was contacted by people who lived outside of Kreis 6 but were happy to travel to me for their lessons. Over the past few years with the move to online learning, more and more of my customers come from the greater Zurich area, from towns such as Winterthur, Opfikon and Volketswil as well as Zurich city.
How does this fit in with my original plan though?
Actually, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the experience with Zoom lessons. These online lessons provide the convenience that I originally envisaged for a local language school but allow me to attract customers from further afield. People who want the lessons that Kreis 6 English specialises in, courses such as advanced and intermediate conversation classes, and intensive exam preparation courses, are able to join the lessons from the comfort of their homes or workplaces. What’s more, the friendships I wanted to foster in my group classes still seem to be happening even if people only see each other via a computer screen.
Of course I do still have some in-person lessons here in Kreis 6 both for individuals and small groups and we’re always looking for new students to join us.
So that’s the story up to now. A local business offering English lessons to motivated and friendly students in Kreis 6 and beyond.
