Many of my students are now reading books in English and are on the look-out for books that are relatively easy to read.
In conversation class we just talked about the book club being established by footballer, Marcus Rashford, to encourage kids from disadvantage backgrounds to read more. We spent a lot of time talking about the books we are reading at the moment and the following recommendations were made.
Crime stories
The Inspector Lynley series set in the UK and written by American author, Elizabeth George
Bruno, Chief of Police series written by British journalist, Martin Walker and set in the Perigord region in France
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Books for teenagers
Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman (as recommended in The Guardian article about Marcus Rashford's book club).
Books by women
We also talked about the 40 books recommended by Elena Ferrante in this recent Guardian article so I've decided to try and work my way through as many books on the list as I can over the next year (or two). I might start with 'The Years' by Annie Erbaux - which was also recommended by one of my students.
You can also look at the resources page for some more ideas or at the books we've read for book club.
